Audi Reveals Plans for New F1 Campus Near Sauber Base

Audi is building a new Formula 1 campus less than a kilometre from Sauber's long-standing headquarters in Hinwil, Switzerland. The move is part of the German manufacturer's preparations for its full works debut in F1.

Since gradually taking over Sauber, Audi has used the Hinwil facility as its base of operations. It was there that the first Audi F1 car was designed and built, while the first Audi engine was developed at a new facility in Neuburg, Germany. However, Audi recognised early on that Sauber's infrastructure needed significant investment.

As a result, they have opted to build a new campus that will become a hub for collaboration and innovation. The old facility will be redeveloped as the team's manufacturing centre and windtunnel operation. Some elements of the new campus were already operational this summer, but full development will not be complete until 2030.

Even with the new campus up and running, Audi intends to retain its satellite technical centre in Bicester, UK. This is to attract personnel who would not relocate full-time to Switzerland. Bicester serves as a bridge for talent unwilling to commit to moving countries.

Audi F1 CEO Mattia Binotto emphasised the importance of the campus. "The campus will play an important role in helping us attract and retain world-class talent while providing the foundations required to achieve our long-term ambitions," he said.

Binotto added that the best engineers, designers, mechanics, and specialists want to work in an environment that allows them to collaborate, innovate, and perform at their highest level. "The campus will help us create exactly that environment," he concluded.

With the new campus under construction and the Hinwil and Neuburg facilities still in operation, Audi is demonstrating its seriousness in building a competitive F1 team. This long-term investment signals that Audi is not just making up the numbers but aims to become a major force in the future.
