Audi has formally notified the FIA of its intention to appeal against the stewards' decision not to penalise Yuki Tsunoda in the Italian Grand Prix. The decision is seen as detrimental to Gabriel Bortoleto, who finished 11th, just one spot away from the final point.
The controversy began on the lap-6 restart when Tsunoda parked in his correct 14th grid slot but at an angle towards the inside wall. Race director Rui Marques was not comfortable with the position and imposed an extra formation lap. Under Article B5.9.4 of the 2026 F1 sporting regulations, any driver who causes an extra formation lap must enter the pit lane and start from the end of it. However, the stewards ruled that Tsunoda did not technically cause the extra lap.
In their verdict, the stewards wrote: "The extra formation lap resulted from the Race Director's assessment of the situation, rather than being directly caused by the driver of Car 22." They also noted that Tsunoda was not out of his grid slot and did not impact other competitors. A key factor was that race control had not informed Racing Bulls that their driver had caused the extra lap, leaving the team no reason to instruct Tsunoda to start from the pitlane.
As a result, Tsunoda went on to score the final point in 10th, while Bortoleto crossed the line in 11th. Audi issued a statement: "Following the Italian Grand Prix, we raised a concern regarding the application of Article B5.9.4. The Stewards issued a decision of No Further Action, and we have notified our intention to appeal. As the matter is now subject to the FIA appeal process, we will not comment further at this stage."
According to Article 15.4 of the FIA International Sporting Code, competitors have one hour after the stewards' decision to notify their intention to appeal. However, this notification does not mean Audi is actually appealing yet. They have an additional 96-hour window to study the case further before deciding whether to follow through.
If Audi proceeds with the appeal and Tsunoda is penalised, Bortoleto would be promoted to 10th, securing a valuable point. This is a crucial moment for Audi as they fight for midfield positions. The stewards' decision has sparked debate over the interpretation of the regulations, with some critics arguing it was too lenient.
The dispute between Audi and the FIA adds to a growing list of controversial race decisions in the 2026 season. With the appeal process underway, fans await whether the result will change or the original decision will stand. One thing is certain: the battle for points is heating up, and every decision could have major implications for the championship.
