Audi has officially filed a notice of intention to appeal the stewards' decision to take no further action against Yuki Tsunoda over his grid position at the start of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, a call that denied the team a point in a tight midfield battle.
Following a red flag caused by Charles Leclerc's crash, at the restart Tsunoda's car angled toward the inside wall in his grid slot. However, video evidence from multiple angles confirmed the car remained within the correct grid box throughout, with Tsunoda adjusting his position only after realizing he was heading for the wrong spot.
Race Director Rui Marques nonetheless called an extra formation lap, stating it was his own decision based on the car's approach and that he was not comfortable starting the race with the car in that position. Racing Bulls argued that Tsunoda had not caused a false start, as no part of his front tyres breached the grid box lines, and that he had ample space to move off, consistent with the drivers' briefing guidance.
The stewards agreed on all counts, determining that the extra formation lap resulted from the Race Director's assessment rather than being directly caused by the driver of Car 22. Under Article B5.9.4, a driver found to have caused an extra formation lap must start from the pit lane, but the stewards noted that this requirement only applies if the driver is officially informed of being the cause. In this case, no such message was sent to Tsunoda or Racing Bulls, and the stewards suggested the FIA might consider implementing a clearer process for the future.
Tsunoda finished 10th, directly ahead of Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto in 11th. Audi confirmed its intention to appeal, stating the matter is now subject to the FIA appeal process. The team has 96 hours to decide whether to formally proceed.
