Fernando Alonso's Formula 1 future remains uncertain. His contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of the 2026 season, and the Spanish driver has yet to decide whether to continue or retire. Aston Martin hopes his decision won't be a dramatic repeat of his 2018 exit.
Alonso first left F1 after a disappointing 2018 season with McLaren-Honda. Now, at 45, he faces a similar crossroads with Aston Martin. Despite the team's efforts, on-track competitiveness has been lacking, sparking speculation that Alonso might call it quits for good.
Aston Martin Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack hopes to retain Alonso. "We have always been clear that the team wants to continue, but we need to respect Fernando's thoughts and the time he wants to take," Krack told Motorsport Week. "We are confident we can reach a good solution for everybody. Now it's about waiting. He needs to make up his mind, and then we move on."
Krack also stressed that Alonso isn't demanding one specific change. "He has made clear that it is not one single thing he wants to see change," he added. "I read about these discussions with Ben Sulayem as well. The sport needs someone like that. We will all be keen to see Fernando continue."
If Alonso does retire, Aston Martin is reluctant to discuss a 'Plan B'. Krack refused to name any potential replacement. "I will not give you any names, and I will also not speak about any plan B," he said. "We very much hope Fernando will continue. He's very important for our team, very important for Formula 1, and motorsport in general. It would be a pity to not have him anymore. And because that would be so dramatic, I do not even want to talk about it or think about it."
Despite the uncertainty, Honda, which will supply engines to Aston Martin from 2026, has expressed a desire to see Alonso win races and championships with them. However, with the car's performance still far from competitive, Alonso's decision could be influenced by the prospect of winning.
Alonso himself has given no indication of when he will announce his decision. Known for his ambition, he won't want to be just a passenger. If he feels he can't fight at the front, retirement might be the logical choice. Aston Martin hopes to convince him that their project still has a bright future.
