Armstrong Targets Consistency at WRC Canarias 2026

WRC, Sportrik Media - Josh Armstrong enters Rally Islas Canarias 2026 under pressure to convert early-season potential into results, following a challenging start to his debut campaign in Rally1 machinery.

While the Irish driver has shown promising pace on individual stages, consistency has remained an issue. Across the opening four rounds, he has scored points only once, with an eighth-place finish in Sweden. This places increased emphasis on delivering a stable and error-free performance in Canarias, particularly as he continues adapting to the demands of top-class rallying.

Armstrong outlined a measured approach for the event, prioritising a clean run while assessing competitiveness against Hyundai Motorsport.

“The target is to have a clean rally and see if we can challenge Hyundai,” he said.

“We know Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT is very strong, but we’ll focus on what we are doing and see what we can achieve.”

The characteristics of Rally Islas Canarias place a premium on precision driving. The high-grip asphalt stages require drivers to maintain maximum cornering speed while carefully managing tyre and brake temperatures, particularly on long downhill sections where thermal load becomes critical.

“This rally really emphasises precision and driving line. You need to keep the speed as high as possible in the corners without overheating the tyres or brakes,” Armstrong explained.

His previous outing in Croatia highlighted both potential and vulnerability. Armstrong briefly led the rally in the early stages before suffering a puncture that compromised his run, with the event eventually ending prematurely. The experience underlined the importance of balancing pace with risk management.

From a technical standpoint, Armstrong expects Canarias to present a different challenge compared to Croatia, although he noted some similarities in the more technical, flowing sections encountered previously.

“It’s clearly a different challenge from Croatia, but some of the stages there had similar technical characteristics, so in some ways it was good preparation,” he said.

He also pointed to prior experience on the island as a minor advantage, despite variations in stage configuration.

“I’ve been here a couple of times before, so some sections are familiar, even if they’re run in a different direction or slightly modified.”

Preparation has been further complicated by the tight schedule, with only a one-week gap between Croatia and Canarias. As a result, Armstrong has relied heavily on data analysis and visualisation rather than extensive physical testing.

“Preparation is more difficult with only one week between rallies. There’s limited time, so it’s mostly about reviewing onboard footage and refining pace notes,” he explained.

Crucially, he highlighted improving confidence with the car on asphalt as a positive development heading into the event.

“The most important thing is that the feeling with the car is getting better on tarmac. That helps build confidence in the notes and commit to the speed.”

Analytically, Armstrong’s performance in Canarias will depend on his ability to maintain consistency, manage thermal degradation of tyres and brakes, and execute accurate pace notes under constrained preparation conditions. With Toyota expected to remain the benchmark on asphalt, his realistic target is to reduce the gap to direct competitors such as Hyundai.

Rally Islas Canarias 2026 therefore represents a key evaluation point in Armstrong’s rookie Rally1 season, determining whether he can translate raw pace into tangible results within the increasingly demanding structure of the championship.
