Tony Arbolino took a bold gamble by switching to slick tyres early and reaped the rewards, setting the fastest time in the second free practice (FP2) for Moto2 at the Red Bull Ring, Austria, on Saturday morning. The Italian set a lap of 1:41.066 on his final attempt, snatching the top spot from Xabi Zurutuza.
The session began under tricky conditions after overnight rain left the track mostly wet. With qualifying expected to be dry later in the day, many riders opted to stay in the pits. Only a few, including Deniz Oncu and Zurutuza, ventured out on wet tyres.
As the track began to dry in the closing stages, Arbolino was among the first to switch to slicks. The decision proved spot on. On his final lap, he unleashed a 1:41.066, beating Zurutuza by 0.801 seconds. Aron Canet finished third, followed by Deniz Oncu and Daniel Munoz.
Others like Marcos Ramirez and Taiyo Furusato also tried slicks late on but could not match Arbolino's pace. The ever-changing conditions made the FP2 results unrepresentative of the true pecking order ahead of qualifying.
Dutch rider Zonta van den Goorbergh took part and ended up eleventh with a time of 1:48.320, 7.254 seconds adrift of Arbolino. His compatriot Barry Baltus went out but failed to set a valid lap time. Collin Veijer is absent after breaking his collarbone on Friday and will not take any further part in the Austrian Grand Prix.
The FP2 results highlight that tyre strategy will be crucial in qualifying. If the track is fully dry, riders who can adapt quickly to slicks, like Arbolino, will have an edge. But the weather at the Red Bull Ring is notoriously unpredictable.
