MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Aprilia Racing has outlined why its performance is particularly strong in long races under hot conditions during the 2026 MotoGP season, a factor shaping the current title battle.

The Italian manufacturer has been dominant in the opening phase of the season, securing three consecutive grand prix victories. However, its Sprint performance has been comparatively limited, highlighting a clear contrast between short-format races and full-distance grands prix. This disparity reflects the technical characteristics of the RS-GP across different race conditions.

Since the tyre regulation changes introduced in 2023, MotoGP has reduced rear tyre options to two compounds: soft and medium. Typically, the soft compound is preferred for Sprint races due to its higher grip but lower durability, while the medium compound is favoured for full-distance races because of its stability and longevity.

Early-season data indicates that Aprilia is significantly more effective when utilising the medium compound. The team has recorded three wins and seven podiums in grands prix, compared to just one victory and three podiums in Sprint races. This trend suggests that the RS-GP is better suited to long-distance race conditions.

Team manager Paolo Bonora confirmed that high temperatures combined with the medium rear tyre provide a key advantage, particularly in terms of stability and power management.

"We really like hot weather conditions with higher temperatures," Bonora said.

"The medium rear tyre gives excellent stability to both the bike and the rider, allowing better power management until the end of the race."

At the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez, Aprilia once again demonstrated this strength, securing a podium with Marco Bezzecchi in second place, while Jorge Martin also delivered a competitive performance. The result was particularly significant following a difficult Sprint marked by incidents that led to retirements.

Bonora also highlighted the team’s ability to recover from setbacks as a crucial element in maintaining consistency across a race weekend.

"After a very difficult Saturday with no points, we stayed focused and kept a positive mindset for Sunday," he explained.

"We moved on from it because it wasn’t a rider error, just an unfortunate situation and a procedural issue."

With a package that performs optimally in hot conditions and over longer race distances, Aprilia holds a strategic advantage across a MotoGP calendar that frequently features high temperatures. This characteristic could prove decisive in the championship battle as the season progresses into its mid-phase, where consistency becomes increasingly critical.
