Kimi Antonelli etched his name into the history books by winning the first-ever Formula 1 race at the Madring, Spain, capitalizing on a strategic blunder by Lando Norris and McLaren. The dramatic race saw the young Mercedes driver show remarkable composure under pressure.
Norris started from pole and led comfortably early on. Antonelli briefly took the lead twice on the opening lap but ran off track and had to hand the position back to Norris. From then on, the McLaren driver looked in control until disaster struck.
Lance Stroll stopped his Aston Martin in the run-off area at Turn 20, triggering a virtual safety car (VSC). Norris had already passed the pit entry when the VSC was deployed, while Antonelli, Max Verstappen, and George Russell were able to pit under the VSC. Norris pitted a lap later, but the race had returned to green flag conditions. A slow pit stop (seven seconds) dropped him behind Antonelli, Verstappen, and Russell.
Charles Leclerc, who opted not to pit, led more laps than anyone else before finally switching to hard tyres on lap 48 of 57, handing the lead to Antonelli, who would never relinquish it.
Verstappen had to settle for second after losing out to Antonelli on the opening lap. He had passed Hamilton and Antonelli, but was forced to give the position back to Hamilton for cutting the chicane. His frustration was evident as he radioed, "He can give me the position now, f***ing bullshit. F***ing mickey-mouse racing this is." Hamilton's race ended soon after with brake problems.
Norris had to settle for third despite a late attack on Verstappen on the penultimate lap. Verstappen cut a chicane while lapping Lindblad and Hulkenberg but escaped investigation. Russell finished fifth after a second stop cost him the position he had gained on Norris.
Liam Lawson scored his best result for Red Bull in sixth, ahead of Franco Colapinto, who won the midfield battle and even beat McLaren's Oscar Piastri. Arvid Lindblad was ninth for Racing Bulls after a tight duel with Audi's Nico Hulkenberg, scoring points for the third time in four races. Carlos Sainz, Sergio Perez, and Lance Stroll also retired.
