Kimi Antonelli's victory at the Italian Grand Prix was more than just a win. Starting from 19th on the grid, he charged through the field to take the chequered flag, extending his championship lead to 66 points. With around 10 rounds remaining, many are asking: is the title fight already over?
Antonelli has been remarkably consistent this season, finishing on the podium 11 times in 13 races. The Mercedes driver has also shown an ability to fight from behind, a rare quality for a young driver. If he continues this form, it's hard to imagine him losing his first world title.
However, the math still says it's possible. A 66-point gap is not insurmountable, especially if Antonelli suffers two DNFs. The pressure would immediately mount. But so far, he appears calm and unfazed, even sharper in crucial moments.
On the other side, George Russell, his teammate and closest rival, must face the bitter reality. The defeat at Monza has left him far behind, and the chance to turn things around is fading. Russell needs a stroke of luck, as seen with Oscar Piastri last year, who managed to outscore his teammate despite an early deficit.
The next race in Baku could be a turning point. Russell is expected to take a grid penalty for an engine change, giving Antonelli a golden opportunity to extend his lead further. If he capitalizes, the title will be within touching distance.
Observers agree that losing the title from this position would require a generational choke from Antonelli. With his performance and composure, that seems highly unlikely. Are we witnessing history in the making in 2026?
