Kimi Antonelli once again sent hearts racing in the Mercedes garage. At the Spanish Grand Prix, the young Italian narrowly avoided kissing the wall before sealing another victory. But it wasn't the win that grabbed headlines—it was his no-holds-barred driving style, a 'luxury problem' that's turning Toto Wolff and his crew grey before their time.
Picture Pete Bonnington, usually the calm voice on the radio, morphing into a schoolteacher in Madrid, constantly reminding the 20-year-old to respect track limits. 'Kimi, don't cross the white line!' might as well have been his mantra. But that's Antonelli for you. To him, white lines are merely suggestions. Luckily, he had already benefited from an earlier virtual safety car, leaving Verstappen and Norris to eat his dust.
The final five laps were pure agony for the Mercedes pit wall. With no real pressure from behind, Antonelli still managed to tag one of the unforgiving concrete walls at Turn 7. 'I touched the wall on the entry to Turn 7,' he yelled over the radio. Earlier, he had already caused panic with a bizarre report: 'Check the car! The steering feels weird...' It was just a sensation, not a crash. But who could stay calm hearing that?
For Toto Wolff, Antonelli's antics are just par for the course. 'I was just talking to his father and we joked: 'What an idiot!' No, that's just Kimi,' he said with a laugh. Wolff even admitted he had to tell Antonelli to sit higher to see the white lines. 'We had a laugh about it. But today, six laps from the end, he says: 'Check the car, I just brushed the wall.' What?! He's causing us grey hair. But maybe he's like this and maybe that's what's making him so quick.'
The question is, will this 'too cool' approach eventually backfire? Wolff is adamant it won't. 'I promise you he's not thinking about it,' he insisted. 'The way this kid is able to compartmentalise and be the young kid that he is and still perform is incredible.' Antonelli is indeed a phenomenon: the youngest driver ever in this position. But his raw speed comes with a hefty risk that cannot be ignored.
Amid all the worry, one thing is certain: Kimi Antonelli is not a driver who can be tamed. He is a storm that cannot be reined in, and Mercedes knows they must ride it—or be swept away. Perhaps Wolff said it best: 'Sometimes for me, he's an inch too cool.' And that's exactly what makes him special.
