Kimi Antonelli is on track to etch his name into Formula 1 history. The young Italian driver is now just one step away from breaking Sebastian Vettel's record as the youngest world champion, while also ending his nation's 73-year wait for a title.

After 11 rounds of the 2026 season, Kimi Antonelli has scored 219 points from six wins, one second place, two third places, and a Sprint win at Silverstone. He holds a 50-point lead over Lewis Hamilton and a 59-point margin over his Mercedes team-mate, George Russell.

With that advantage, Antonelli is in a prime position to become the youngest champion in F1 history, surpassing Vettel's record set in 2010 when the German was 23 years, 4 months, and 11 days old. To claim that record, Antonelli must be crowned champion before January 5, 2030, giving him four seasons (2026-2029) to do so. He already holds records as the youngest driver to set a fastest lap, lead a lap, and lead the world championship.

If Antonelli converts his strong 2026 position into a maiden title, he will end a 73-year drought for an Italian world champion. Italy dominated the early years of F1, winning three of the first four titles between 1950 and 1953. Giuseppe Farina became the first champion, followed by Alberto Ascari, who became the first multiple champion with his 1952 and 1953 successes.

Since Ascari, the closest an Italian has come to winning the title was Michele Alboreto, who finished runner-up to Alain Prost in 1985. Drivers like Jean Alesi, Jarno Trulli, and Giancarlo Fisichella all won races but never mounted a serious championship challenge.
