Alpine has expressed its disappointment and frustration after the FIA's International Court of Appeal (ICA) ruled to reinstate the time penalties that dropped Pierre Gasly from the podium at the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix.
The saga began when Gasly was handed two five-second penalties for speeding in the pit lane during the race. Alpine opted not to serve the penalties in-race, relying instead on their 'Right to Review' after the event. That initial appeal succeeded, as the FIA and FOM acknowledged that the penalties had been triggered by an erroneous timing loop system.
McLaren and Red Bull then lodged an appeal with the ICA, arguing on the grounds of "sporting fairness." Their case was successful, with the tribunal directing that the penalties be re-applied to Gasly. The ICA reasoned that the Official Timing System (OTS) has been in use since 1996 and that the metrics for measuring the 60 km/h pit-lane speed limit were clearly defined to all teams and drivers before the race weekend.
Team Statement
In an official statement, Alpine made it clear they disagree with the decision and continue to assert that Gasly did not breach the pit-lane speed limit at any point. They feel "unjustly punished" but respect the panel's ruling from the recent hearing in Paris.
"The team expresses its disappointment and frustration with the outcome reached by the FIA International Court of Appeal relating to the result of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix. While we disagree with the decision, and still fully maintain that Car #10 did not exceed the Pit Lane speed limit at any point during the race, the team acknowledges the decision of the judging panel from the recent hearing in Paris," the statement read.
"While the result is not what we had hoped for, as we feel that we have been unjustly punished, the team is firmly focused on continuing to improve its performance on track and remains in a close and very competitive Championship fight. This outcome will not deter the team's efforts and motivation in achieving its objectives by the end of the season," they added.
The decision is undoubtedly a blow for the Enstone-based squad, which had briefly celebrated a podium finish. As a result, Isack Hadjar is reinstated to the final podium spot. Despite the setback, Alpine vows to continue fighting and remains motivated to reach their goals for the remainder of the season.
