Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have been cleared to compete in the Sprint Race at the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix 2026 despite a highly uncompetitive showing in Sprint Qualifying, following a formal dispensation granted by the FIA.

During SQ1, Stroll failed to set a representative lap time after suffering a significant lock-up on his only push lap. Alonso, meanwhile, recorded a 1:41.311 lap, leaving him nearly 13 seconds adrift of the benchmark set by Lando Norris of McLaren, who ultimately secured Sprint pole position.

Alonso’s lap time fell well outside the 107 percent threshold required for classification, placing both Aston Martin drivers in a position where participation in the Sprint Race was not guaranteed under standard regulations. This left the team reliant on a discretionary decision from the stewards.

The stewards ultimately approved both entries based on their performances during the earlier free practice session. Although Stroll had been the slowest in that session, his lap time remained within an acceptable margin relative to the field, including Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, who set the pace.

The ruling was issued under Article B2.2.3b of the FIA Formula 1 regulations, which allows drivers to be permitted to start if they have demonstrated sufficient pace in another session during the same event. This provision offers flexibility in exceptional circumstances such as those encountered by Aston Martin in Miami.

From a technical perspective, Aston Martin’s struggles highlight the broader challenges associated with adapting to the 2026 regulations, particularly in integrating the new power unit supplied by Honda. Issues with system performance and overall car balance have significantly impacted both single-lap pace and drivability.

Starting from the back of the grid, Alonso and Stroll face a demanding Sprint Race scenario, where limited laps and no mandatory pit stops reduce opportunities for recovery. Track position and clean execution will be critical if they are to make progress through the field.

The outcome in Miami will serve as an important benchmark for Aston Martin, offering insight into the effectiveness of its current package and shaping the team’s development direction for the upcoming rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
