Alonso Slams Monza No Longer Worthy of Tempio della Velocita Title

Monza, the legendary circuit long hailed as the Tempio della Velocita, has lost its crown. Fernando Alonso has boldly declared that the era of pure speed at this track is over, and the culprit is Formula 1's latest technical regulations, which limit drivers to around 312 km/h on the longest straight in the racing calendar.

Alonso's statement is more than just nostalgic grumbling. The two-time world champion witnessed firsthand how his Aston Martin struggled in Q1, failing to escape the drop zone and only avoiding the back row thanks to engine change penalties imposed on several rivals.

New Rules Killing the Essence of Speed

According to Alonso, the core issue lies in modern power units that split power almost equally between the combustion engine and electric motor. On historic tracks like Monza, full of long straights, the battery doesn't have enough time to recharge optimally.

As a result, top speeds are actually lower than at more twisty circuits. Alonso even drew comparisons: at Barcelona his car could reach 350-360 km/h, at the Hungaroring even 355 km/h, but at Monza it only manages around 312 km/h. A bitter irony for a track nicknamed the temple of speed.

Sharp Criticism from a Veteran Driver

For Alonso, who claimed two victories at Monza in 2007 and 2010, this situation highlights the wrong direction in regulation development. He laments the loss of the most fundamental element of racing at this historic circuit.

Alonso's comments represent some of the harshest criticism from an active driver against the technical direction of modern F1. With Fernando Alonso's performance continuing to decline with Aston Martin, his frustration is increasingly understandable.
