Fernando Alonso has taken direct aim at Alex Albon following their opening-lap collision at the United States Grand Prix, labeling his rival as part of the lower-third Formula 1 grid where driver quality is very low.
The incident erupted when Albon dived down the inside of Alonso, who was running alongside Esteban Ocon's Haas on his outside. The resulting contact damaged Albon's Williams front wing and stripped the left-hand bargeboard from Alonso's Aston Martin machine.
Alonso described the aftermath as leaving him with half a car, costing him half a second or more per lap while wondering how he managed to keep going and remain semi-competitive despite the heavy aerodynamic handicap.

The F1 stewards opted not to penalize the move, but Alonso made his frustrations crystal clear after finishing a lapped 16th following a delayed front wing change during his second pit stop.
"I think when you start at the back there is this risk always," Alonso stated. "I think the quality of the drivers in the lower third of the grid is very low, as we saw today with Alex. So I think we need to improve the car and start a little bit higher up."
Offering his perspective, Albon explained that he felt he was squeezed during the corner sequence. "It felt like there was a car on the right side of Fernando and he gave Fernando enough space as if he thought there was only one car on his inside but then I was on the inside."
Despite the early race drama and subsequent damage, Albon admitted he still enjoyed the hard-fought wheel-to-wheel battles against the seasoned Spanish world champion later in the afternoon.
