Alonso's Dream F1 Circuit Design Hit by 2026 Engine Rules

If you were given the power to stitch together the greatest corners of global motorsport to create the ultimate Formula 1 track, what would you choose? This fascinating question was posed to Fernando Alonso during a recent stage appearance alongside his fellow drivers, where he was asked to build his dream circuit by picking three individual sectors from the current F1 calendar.

As an Aston Martin veteran, the Spanish driver did not hesitate to assemble an absolute masterpiece of a racetrack, combining some of the most iconic, high-speed, and aerodynamically demanding stretches of asphalt in the world. For his opening choice, the two-time world champion immediately looked toward Asia.

"I think will be, yeah, again Suzuka sector one," declared Fernando Alonso, selecting the legendary, high-speed 'S' Curves of the Japanese Grand Prix. For his second sector, the Spaniard chose to leap into the heart of the Ardennes forest in Europe.

"Then yeah, Spa sector two," he added, choosing the long, flowing, and incredibly fast middle section of the Belgian Grand Prix. To finish the lap of his ambitious layout, he brought it back home to Spain.

"And Barcelona sector three," Fernando Alonso concluded. However, while the crowd and the interviewer loved the combination, Sergio Perez immediately recognized a massive regulatory flaw with stitching Suzuka and Spa together under the new engine rules.

Because the 2026 power units rely on a 50/50 power split between the internal combustion engine and the battery, energy management has become the grid's biggest headache. If a track demands too much full-throttle deployment without enough heavy braking zones to recharge the system, the battery simply runs out of energy on the straights.

This sudden, jarring loss of top speed is known in the paddock as clipping. A circuit combining the relentless high-speed flow of Suzuka and the massive full-throttle stretches of Spa would drain a 2026 battery almost instantly.

"There will be a lot of clipping on that circuit," Sergio Perez—now racing for Cadillac—immediately joked, roasting the sheer technical impossibility of Fernando Alonso's dream track.

Never one to back down, Fernando Alonso quickly fired back with a cheeky vote of confidence for his own team's Honda engine programme for 2026. "Not for us," Fernando Alonso grinned, prompting a laugh from the crowd.
