Fernando Alonso was forced to end his Azerbaijan Grand Prix early after Aston Martin suffered yet another reliability nightmare with their power unit. The Spanish driver stopped his car in the pits on lap 20, following a futile battle against a significant performance drop.
The race at Baku City Circuit turned into a disaster for Aston Martin. Teammate Lance Stroll was the first to retire on lap seven due to a water pressure leak. Alonso met a similar fate 14 laps later, but with a more complex drama: he had to deal with a Honda power unit issue that cost him precious time on the straights.
It all began on lap 12 when Alonso reported over the radio that the K0 system was not working on the main straight. His race engineer, Andrew Vizard, confirmed the issue and tried various solutions, including switching to engine mode 5. However, those efforts were in vain. By lap 14, Alonso had lost over a second on the straight, and he again complained that something was wrong with the engine.
“I think there's an engine problem, it can't be possible to have this gap,” Alonso said over the radio, expressing his frustration. The team kept asking him to persevere and try mode 5, but by lap 18, Alonso had lost eight tenths of a second. Finally, on lap 20, he decided to stop the car. “I think we have an engine problem. Now the gap was eight tenths of a second,” he said before stating his intention to retire.
Alonso's decision to take matters into his own hands showed just how desperate the situation was. He had tried everything to overcome the problem, but the unstable Honda power unit left him uncompetitive. This incident was a major blow for Aston Martin, who are already struggling to develop the AMR26. The failure in Baku adds to the team's growing list of reliability issues throughout the season.
For Alonso, it was a disappointing weekend. Although he had a fierce battle with Valtteri Bottas from Cadillac, technical problems forced him to surrender. The impact on the drivers' championship could be significant, as he lost valuable points. The team must now work hard to improve reliability before the next race.
