Fernando Alonso has confirmed he will remain in Formula 1 with Aston Martin through the 2027 season. Alonso insists he still has the burning desire to compete at the highest level.
“This is my life, it's in my blood. I keep racing and I keep enjoying it,” Alonso told the BBC. “I still feel confident, aware that I have something extra. I feel as fast as anyone else.”
Alonso's decision to stay is not without context, as Aston Martin endured a disappointing 2026 campaign under the new regulations. With Adrian Newey on board, expectations were high, but the team failed to deliver. Alonso described 2026 as too bad to be true. He now hopes for a significant improvement, especially from Honda's power unit, which is set for a major evaluation ahead of 2027.
“In free practice, I still see many drivers making mistakes. That reassures me because I know I'm faster than them,” he added. “Now I've resigned myself to this period of anonymity. We are preparing for the moment of truth and it will be a surprise for everyone.”
Alonso's words suggest that he and the team have a master plan yet to be revealed. The main focus is to maximize car and engine development to be competitive in 2027. If Honda can provide a strong power unit, Alonso is confident Aston Martin can return to the front.
