Fernando Alonso has made it clear he will not announce his Formula 1 retirement during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend at the brand-new Madring circuit. The 45-year-old is set to compete in his second home race of the season, marking his first appearance on a Spanish street circuit since his memorable victory in Valencia back in 2012.

However, Fernando Alonso will need to temper expectations given the challenging start Aston Martin has endured in F1's new era. Thirteen rounds into 2026, Alonso has managed only three points for the Silverstone-based squad.

Retirement Decision Delayed

Amid this slump, many expected Alonso to call it quits, but the Spanish driver insists a decision will be made based on the team's potential for 2027. When asked if he had any announcements for his home GP, Alonso firmly refuted the idea: "No," he told media at Monza.

Interestingly, Alonso sees an opportunity at the Madring circuit. He believes the AMR26 could perform better there, given the track's chassis-dependent layout. "Looking forward, I think from the remaining races, we know that there are weekends that we will struggle and weekends that will be better. Maybe the next one is one of the opportunities," he explained.

Difficult Moments at Monza

The Italian GP was another tough outing for Alonso, retiring on Lap 23 after picking up damage at Lesmo. The Honda engine's top speed of only 319 km/h at Monza even prompted him to strip the circuit of its 'Temple of Speed' nickname under the 2026 regulations.

Looking ahead, Alonso predicts Las Vegas will expose their weaknesses on long straights. "But there's going to be some other weekends where we can have more fun, maybe in Singapore or Austin," he said. With the team at the back of the grid, Alonso remains pragmatic: "I'm not too stressed about this year. If an opportunity comes to score one more point, OK. If it doesn't, OK as well. It will not change our mentality, our determination to have a better 2027."
