Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are set to start the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the very back of the grid after Aston Martin opted to take fresh power unit components. The FIA confirmed a combined 45-place grid penalty, with Alonso receiving 25 places and Stroll 20, effectively relegating both drivers to the rear of the 22-car field in Baku.
The penalties come as no real surprise given Aston Martin's torrid 2026 campaign. The team has managed just three points so far, plagued by retirements, mechanical failures, and a persistent lack of pace. With both drivers already accustomed to starting near the back, the penalties don't drastically alter their expected grid positions, but they underscore the team's ongoing struggles.
According to FIA documents, Alonso has exceeded his allocation by taking a fifth engine, fifth turbocharger, and ninth power unit ancillary component. Stroll, meanwhile, has taken a seventh energy store, sixth turbocharger, sixth control electronics unit, and eighth ancillary component. Under Article B8.2.8, each additional element incurs a 10-place penalty for the first two and 5 places for subsequent ones, leading to the accumulated penalties.
For Alonso, this is yet another setback in a season that has seen the Spaniard fighting at the back despite his relentless determination. Stroll, too, has faced his share of difficulties. Both drivers will now rely on race strategy, safety cars, or unpredictable Baku moments to salvage anything from the weekend.
The penalties also force Aston Martin to rethink their approach. With grid position already compromised, they might sacrifice qualifying performance to focus on race setup. However, overtaking in Baku is notoriously difficult, making a points finish a tall order.
Still, Baku has a habit of throwing up surprises. A well-timed safety car or a chaotic race could play into their hands. But one thing is certain: Alonso and Stroll will have to dig deep to climb through the field and challenge for points.
As the team looks to the remainder of the season, solving reliability and speed issues becomes paramount. For now, fans of the British squad will hope for a glimmer of resilience in Azerbaijan.
