Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will start the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the back of the grid after receiving a combined 45-place grid penalty for exceeding their Honda engine component allocation.
Ahead of the 15th round of the 2026 season, both Aston Martin drivers have surpassed their pool of power unit elements. Alonso, who has taken a fifth internal combustion engine, fifth turbocharger, and ninth power unit ancillary component, has been handed a 25-place grid penalty. Stroll, using his sixth turbocharger, seventh energy store, sixth control electronics unit, and eighth power unit ancillary component, receives a 20-place penalty.
Per FIA regulations, any grid penalty exceeding 15 places results in a mandatory start from the back of the grid. Consequently, both drivers are guaranteed to line up at the rear regardless of their qualifying positions.
The penalties were confirmed in separate stewards' documents. For Alonso (Car 14), the statement read: “The penalty is imposed in accordance with Article B8.2.8 of the FIA F1 Regulations. The use of (Element #1) and (Element #2) additional element(s) carries a 10 grid place penalty by virtue of Article B8.2.8a, and the use of (Element #3) additional element carries a 5 grid place penalty by virtue of Article B8.2.8b. Therefore, there is an accumulation of 25 places.”
For Stroll (Car 18), the document stated: “The penalty is imposed in accordance with Article B8.2.8. The use of each additional element in this case carries a 5 grid place penalty therefore there is an accumulation of 20 places.”
The penalties compound an already difficult weekend for Aston Martin. In FP2, Stroll was 21st, four seconds off the pace, while Alonso was last, a further 0.5s behind his teammate. With such a performance deficit, the grid penalties have little practical effect on their starting positions.
However, the situation highlights the deeper issues with the Honda power unit package and the challenges Aston Martin faces in managing its remaining component allocation for the rest of the season. The team will need to focus on damage limitation and extracting any valuable data from the remaining rounds.
