James Allison has revealed that Mercedes is finding about half a second every two months in the wind tunnel. The technical director is confident the next upgrade package will restore their early-season advantage.

While main rivals Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull have all brought significant upgrades this season, Mercedes has largely held back. However, the Brackley-based squad still leads both championships.

F1 2026 was always expected to be a development war due to new technical regulations and power units. Mercedes made a strong start but their advantage has been eroded by Ferrari and McLaren, who have both claimed wins, while Red Bull has joined the fight for podiums.

Mercedes won six consecutive races at the start of the season before Lewis Hamilton ended that streak in Barcelona. Ferrari added a win at Silverstone, and McLaren won the Hungarian Grand Prix. Mercedes has won only two of the last five races.

Allison acknowledged that Mercedes started from a stronger position and therefore has not been as aggressive in development as rivals. "Aerodynamically, the gain rate is about six to seven times what it was last year. It's about half a second every two months," he said.

He also explained their bold development strategy, delaying aero and bodywork updates longer than ever before. "We emptied everything out to launch a strong car. As a result, we got as much of that steep development slope into the first car as humanly possible," Allison added.

Allison believes the next development step could negate gains made by Ferrari and McLaren. "We're a bit out of phase. Everyone is developing about half a second every two months. One development cycle will bring that to nothing. We just have to ride out these scary events when others bring their fancy new bits," he explained.

Mercedes still leads both championships. Kimi Antonelli is 50 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the drivers' standings, while Mercedes leads Ferrari by 72 points in the constructors' battle.
