Alex Marquez will attempt to return at the Czech MotoGP in Brno, approximately one month after suffering a broken right collarbone and a marginal fracture of his C7 vertebra in a major Catalunya accident. Gresini Racing has confirmed that the Spanish rider will travel to the Czech Republic, although his participation remains dependent on passing the official MotoGP medical examination at the circuit on Thursday.

The planned comeback represents a critical stage in Marquez's recovery after undergoing surgery on his collarbone. He missed the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello and the Hungarian Grand Prix at Balaton Park, two absences that contributed to his fall to ninth in the riders' championship. Every additional missed round would further damage his position after a strong opening phase of the season that included victory at Jerez.

Brno Medical Check Will Decide Marquez's Return

The medical assessment will determine more than whether the injured bones have healed sufficiently. MotoGP doctors must establish whether Marquez can control the motorcycle safely under heavy braking, rapid direction changes, and the repeated physical loads generated during a complete session. The right collarbone is particularly important because it absorbs pressure when the rider supports his upper body under braking and moves across the motorcycle through consecutive corners.

The marginal C7 vertebra fracture makes the evaluation more complex. Although the latest checks in Spain produced enough confidence for Marquez to travel, the final decision remains with the MotoGP medical team. He must be declared fit before taking part in Friday practice, and clearance alone will not guarantee that he can complete the full weekend without physical limitations.

"After the latest medical checks in Spain, Alex Marquez will fly to the Czech Republic this weekend with the aim of being declared fit," Gresini said in its official statement. The wording makes clear that the team has not yet confirmed a full return. Marquez is entering an attempted comeback, with his physical response on the motorcycle becoming the next decisive test after the medical examination.

Brno Layout Will Test Marquez's Physical Condition

Brno is a demanding venue for a rider returning from injury. The circuit combines elevation changes, significant braking zones, and flowing corner sequences that require constant body movement. Physical stress is generated not only when braking heavily but also when maintaining body position through long corners and controlling the motorcycle under acceleration.

For Marquez, the challenge will extend beyond producing a single competitive lap. He must maintain strength and stability across longer runs, including practice, qualifying, the Sprint, and the Grand Prix. An injury may feel manageable during the opening laps before repeated loading causes fatigue, reduced movement, or discomfort later in the session.

Gresini must also assess whether Marquez can perform emergency movements without restriction. MotoGP riders frequently need to react immediately to slides, sudden changes in direction, or contact with another motorcycle. The decision to continue through the weekend will therefore depend not only on lap times but also on his consistency, control, and physical condition after each session.

Marquez Absence Disrupted Gresini's Momentum

The Catalunya accident occurred while Marquez was running competitively. He had won the Sprint and was following Pedro Acosta closely in the Grand Prix when the KTM rider suffered a sudden technical problem. The incident forced Marquez off the circuit and brought an abrupt end to the momentum he had built earlier in the campaign.

During his recovery, Michele Pirro replaced him at Mugello, while Iker Lecuona took over the bike at Balaton Park. Those substitutions allowed Gresini to continue running two motorcycles, but they could not fully replace the continuity of feedback and experience Marquez had developed with the team's Ducati package.

Marquez's return would allow Gresini to restore its regular development and race-weekend programme. However, the team cannot prioritise championship points over his physical condition. The first objective in Brno will be to confirm that he can ride without aggravating the injuries or losing control because of restricted strength and movement.

If Marquez passes the medical examination, Friday practice will provide the clearest indication of whether he can complete the Czech Grand Prix. Lap time may not initially be the main priority, with Gresini expected to monitor his braking stability, direction changes, and endurance across each run. Brno will therefore serve not only as a comeback opportunity but also as a complete test of whether Marquez is ready to resume the full physical demands of a MotoGP weekend.
