Alex Marquez has been slapped with a double long lap penalty for Sunday's main Japanese Grand Prix following a chaotic multi-rider crash on the opening lap of the Motegi Sprint.
The trouble unfolded when the Gresini rider clipped the rear of Pedro Acosta's KTM as the pack charged into Turn 3. The impact immediately sent both riders tumbling into the gravel trap, while Fabio di Giannantonio was collected in the secondary fallout.
The aftermath of the Turn 3 collision left marshals scrambling, with Di Giannantonio needing to walk toward a waiting ambulance for medical checks following the heavy impact.

FIM Stewards officially confirmed the sanction under protocol MGP-CC5 for opening-lap incidents creating dangerous situations. Because it marks his first offence of the season, the baseline sanction is a strict double long lap penalty.
This severe handicap completely alters the tactical approach for Sunday's grand prix. Recovering from the penalty loop will demand pinpoint precision and relentless pace to salvage meaningful championship points.
