Gresini rider Alex Marquez pulled off a stunning performance to outpace his older brother and secure a rare pole position during a high-stakes qualifying session at the Sepang International Circuit for the 2026 Malaysian Grand Prix.
The Spanish rider delivered his decisive blow on his penultimate lap, edging out the championship leader by a razor-thin margin of just 0.070 seconds. Having previously tasted victory in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races at Sepang, his proven affinity for the Malaysian tarmac shone brightly once again.
Meanwhile, Marc Marquez looked poised to extend his commanding title advantage significantly, especially with his closest championship rival sidelined earlier in the morning. However, his late charge inadvertently offered a tow to future factory Ducati teammate Pedro Acosta, allowing the KTM rider to snatch third place on the front row.

The second row of the grid will feature the Aprilia machines of Ai Ogura and Marco Bezzecchi alongside VR46 Ducati's Fabio di Giannantonio. Further back, Enea Bastianini, Johann Zarco, and Franco Morbidelli locked in their respective grid slots on the third row following a fiercely contested battle in the opening qualifying phase.
It proved to be a frustrating afternoon for other title hopefuls, highlighted by a costly mistake at Turn 1 during Q2 where a major run-wide prompted a visible display of anger. Relegated to tenth place on the starting grid, the reigning factory Ducati rider faces an uphill battle during the upcoming Sepang Sprint race.
