Alex Marquez stole the show in the second practice session of the Japanese MotoGP at Motegi, setting a new all-time lap record of 1:42.811. The Gresini Racing rider impressed in tricky conditions with the track still damp and slippery after earlier rain.
The session was briefly red-flagged when Ai Ogura suffered a technical issue. Smoke billowed from his Trackhouse Aprilia, raising concerns of oil on the start/finish straight. Once the track was deemed safe, riders resumed the session.
Marco Bezzecchi had led the timesheets for a long period, but Alex Marquez took over at the top with ten minutes remaining. Pedro Acosta of Tech3 GASGAS had to settle for second, just 0.076s adrift. Meanwhile, Marc Marquez completed the top three, exactly one tenth off his younger brother.

Bezzecchi eventually dropped to fourth after Enea Bastianini improved late to enter the top five. Fabio Di Giannantonio was sixth, followed by Fabio Quartararo who dragged his Yamaha to seventh, beating championship leader Jorge Martin who had to settle for eighth.
Both LCR Honda riders, Diogo Moreira and Johann Zarco, crashed late on but still ended the session in ninth and tenth. Fermin Aldeguer narrowly missed out in 11th, ahead of Brad Binder and Raul Fernandez. Franco Morbidelli finished 14th, while Ogura, hindered by his technical problem, was 15th.
Francesco Bagnaia had a difficult session and could only manage 16th, while Luca Marini, who crashed before the red flag, was 17th ahead of Jack Miller. Somkiat Chantra finished 18th, followed by Alex Rins who also crashed early. Toprak Razgatlioglu was 21st and Maverick Vinales completed the standings in 22nd.
LCR Honda were dealt a blow after Takaaki Nakagami suffered a collarbone fracture in his FP1 crash. The Japanese rider is ruled out for the remainder of the weekend. With this result, Alex Marquez sends a strong signal that he is ready to fight at the front, while his main rivals still need to find an answer to his pace at Motegi.
