Alex Dunne will line up second for the Formula 2 Feature Race at Madring. But for the Irishman, qualifying was less about raw speed and more about mental resilience at a circuit already branded a 'car killer' by James Vowles.
Madring's debut has been chaotic, with 19 red flags in F3 testing. F2 felt the heat too: three red flags disrupted qualifying, forcing drivers to tread carefully.
Dunne admitted building rhythm was tough. “The red flags kind of reset, and you have to go again,” he told Motorsport Week. “At other tracks we push at 100%, but here I was always a little under the limit because you don’t know what’s going to happen.”
References from F3 were of limited use. “Some of us looked at onboards, but corners that aren’t corners for them become corners for us because we arrive much faster,” explained the MP Motorsport driver. Turn 14 proved tricky: he thought it was flat on the sim, but only managed it on his final push lap.
Dunne's consistency this season has been remarkable—five podiums and countless top-five finishes, a big step up from last year's ups and downs. Yet victory remains elusive. “It just hasn’t materialised in races. The team and I are working hard to turn it around, but it’s difficult,” he added.
Starting from P2, Dunne has a golden chance to break his duck. But Madring's treacherous nature and red flags could be a double-edged sword. The Feature Race will test his mental fortitude and adaptability to the limit.
