The tension in the Formula 1 2026 paddock reached a boiling point as Alexander Albon issued a sharp response to Fernando Alonso following a fiery clash at the United States Grand Prix. The veteran Spanish driver had previously slammed Albon's driving standards, claiming that the quality of drivers at the back of the grid was extremely low after an opening-lap collision.
The controversy ignited at Turn 11 during the opening lap when the Williams charger attempted an aggressive dive up the inside at the hairpin before the back straight. The move resulted in heavy contact that destroyed the left-hand side bargeboard and critical aerodynamic elements on the two-time world champion's machine.
Although race stewards opted to take no further action regarding the clash, Alonso finished 16th ahead of Albon in 17th, prompting him to publicly state that the bottom of the grid lacks quality. Addressing the veteran's jab, Albon brushed off the criticism and likened the intense wheel-to-wheel combat to historic motorsport events.
"Have you ever watched the Goodwood and see the Mustang and the Mini? Well, it was the same thing as that race," Albon told media members. "It was fun, and it is always fun to race Fernando; he's strong, but he is always fair."
Elaborating on the specifics of the incident, Albon noted that a rapidly pinching racing line trapped him on the inside kerbs. He explained that a car positioned to the right of the Aston Martin driver effectively squeezed his trajectory, leaving him with minor front wing damage despite efforts to evade disaster.
Albon's afternoon was further compounded by a nightmare spell dealing with blue flags, which severely hampered his race pace by costing him up to 12 seconds. Despite the setback, he attempted a strategic rear-guard defense to aid his teammate before the Aston Martin cars ultimately broke through.
