Alan Permane, Racing Bulls team principal, has admitted that Liam Lawson standing in for Isack Hadjar again at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix is not an ideal situation, for both the team and the New Zealander.
Unlike the last-minute substitution at Zandvoort, this time Lawson knew well in advance that he had a strong chance of racing at Monza. “It's been easier this weekend. He knew there was a very big possibility of driving here,” Permane told Sky F1.
Although Hadjar did everything he could to recover in time, the team had a well-prepared backup plan. “Isack did everything he could to come back, but we had simulated sessions planned, so flights were in place, sim sessions in place, and we just had to push the button on them,” Permane explained. The logistics had been locked in early, leaving little room for change even as Hadjar's recovery progressed.
Permane was candid that the situation is uncomfortable, both competitively and from Lawson's perspective as a driver on loan from Red Bull. “It's not ideal, it's certainly not ideal for us. Liam, whilst he's happy to help, he just says 'I want to get back in my car',” he said. Lawson has been told clearly that his race seat will be ready as soon as Hadjar is declared fit.
On the technical side, Lawson provided valuable feedback about the Racing Bulls car's characteristics. “He's given us some feedback, and one of the things is that the car has a lot more load,” Permane said. “In the high speed, he really feels it. Certainly in Zandvoort, in those very high-speed corners, he said you could really feel the load.”
That characteristic appears to cut both ways depending on corner type. “Ours is a little bit more friendly in the lower-speed mid-to-exit. It might not be as quick, I'm sure it isn't as quick, but I think it's a little bit easier to manage,” he added, offering insight into how Racing Bulls' package behaves across different corner speeds from a driver with recent, direct comparison to the Red Bull car.
Lawson will continue to fill in until Hadjar is confirmed fit, and Permane's comments suggest a return could come as soon as the team is satisfied with his recovery, rather than tied to a fixed date.
