Ai Ogura has been given the green light to return to MotoGP action at the Austrian Grand Prix 2026. The Japanese rider was declared fit after passing medical checks on Thursday, September 17, 2026. This comes as a relief for Trackhouse Aprilia, who have been without Ogura for the last two rounds due to a left thumb injury sustained in training ahead of the Aragon GP.
The injury required surgery and forced him to miss Misano. Now, after intensive recovery, he will be back on the Aprilia RS-GP at the Red Bull Ring. However, his fitness is not without conditions. Ogura must undergo a re-evaluation after FP1 on Friday.
“Of course, a little less than before. The right hand, but now the difference between the hands is not that big, so yes, little by little I'm getting back to normal,” Ogura said about his condition. He admitted that pain will still be present during the race. “As long as I'm riding the bike, I'll definitely have to endure the pain anyway, but there's no chance of making it worse. So yes, I skipped Misano just in case I crashed and made it worse. I'm just following the doctor's orders,” he added.
Ogura also tested a small bike last Monday. “Last Monday, yes. And small bikes, so it could be almost any type of example. At least on a small bike, I was fine, almost 100%,” he explained. This gave him confidence to return to MotoGP, though he knows the real challenge lies on the bigger machine.
FP1 at the Red Bull Ring will be the real test. Ogura plans to ride normally from the start, but he is also prepared to adapt if needed. “Tomorrow morning I'll start with everything in its usual place. And I'll put the real advice into practice. But if I struggle a lot to do it, then that's the right thing,” he said.
Ogura's return is warmly welcomed by the team and fans. He has been one of the standout riders this season. His impressive performances before the injury have left many eagerly awaiting his comeback. Even at less than 100% fitness, he remains a threat in every race.
The Austrian GP will be a test of character for Ogura. If he can be competitive despite not being fully fit, it will further cement his reputation as a tough racer. However, his health is the priority. The medical team will continue to monitor him, and a final decision on whether he can continue the weekend will be made after FP1.
For Ai Ogura, this is the first step towards full recovery. All eyes will be on him as he speeds around the Red Bull Ring, proving that his spirit never wavers even when injury stands in his way.
