Pedro Acosta secured second place at the Aragon MotoGP with a stunning around-the-outside move on Marco Bezzecchi, but the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider insists the pass felt “easy” thanks to his superior speed.
Starting fourth, Pedro Acosta got stuck behind Marc Marquez, whose rear ride-height device re-engaged entering Turn 2, causing him to slow and lose positions to Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin.
Bezzecchi led the opening laps, but Marquez and Acosta both passed Martin and set off after the Aprilia rider. On lap six, Marquez tried a move at Turn 15, but both lost momentum on exit, and as the turbulence from each other’s bikes buffeted them on the run to Turn 16, Acosta saw an opportunity.
With Bezzecchi boxed in on the inside of Marquez, on the dirty part of the track, Acosta braked later and swept around the outside. A spectacular move from the stands, but Acosta explained that his overspeed approaching Turn 16 made it relatively straightforward.
“It was my moment to try to catch Marc and Marco and ride with them,” Acosta said in the post-race press conference. “At the end, they were both on the left, I had a bit of slipstream, and I just went to the right. I was in the right position, even if I had to use the kerb a bit. It was an easy move, I would say, for the speed I was coming with.”
Acosta ultimately took second, but he knew Marquez would likely have something extra in the final laps. “Marco was putting amazing pace at the beginning, and Marc was really pushing to catch him. I just tried to follow the pace. I knew Marc would have something at the end because from behind he looked really relaxed. We didn’t finish far, but there’s still work to do,” he added.
The result shows Acosta’s growing consistency with KTM, though he admits there’s still a gap to close to the front-runners.
