Pedro Acosta once again stole the spotlight at MotoGP Aragon. The KTM rider from Murcia finished fourth in the Sprint, once more dragging his RC16 into the fight with Ducati and Aprilia—something that, on paper, the Austrian machine shouldn't be capable of.
Acosta ended the short race at MotorLand just six tenths behind the final podium spot, occupied by Marco Bezzecchi. His path, though, was far from smooth. A lengthy duel with Jorge Martin cost him time and energy, preventing him from closing the gap further.
“Podium? I think that was too optimistic a result,” Acosta admitted in the traditional post-race interview with Sky Sport MotoGP, as reported by FormulaPassion. “But that I could have been closer to Bez at the end, that's for sure. We did a good race. We know we usually struggle in qualifying and the Sprint, but today wasn't too bad. So we have to be satisfied.”
After numerous reliability issues in the first half of the season, KTM received the green light from other manufacturers to break the seals and develop their engine. At Aragon, however, the Austrian factory focused mainly on ensuring no further problems arose. “We didn't come here with the idea of improving performance [of the engine],” Acosta explained. “We just wanted to verify everything was working properly and that there were no extra issues. Later, with more races, we'll see if we can find more performance from the engine, but for now everything is running well.”
Pedro Acosta's performance at Aragon once again proved that his talent can compensate for technical shortcomings. Though a podium remains a distant dream, his consistency at the sharp end is a positive sign for KTM as they rebuild confidence. If engine development goes as planned, Acosta could become a serious threat in the second half of the season.
