5 Things to Watch at F1 Dutch GP: Antonelli's Big Chance

Formula 1 returns from its summer shutdown this weekend at Zandvoort, with the 2026 season now reaching a critical juncture. The Dutch Grand Prix marks the halfway point, where titles are decided, legacies are forged, and next year's grid spots are won or lost.

There's plenty to look forward to, from Kimi Antonelli's seemingly unstoppable march to the title to a sudden driver change at Red Bull. Here are five things to keep an eye on.

Antonelli on the Brink of History

The 19-year-old Mercedes driver looks unstoppable in his quest to become the youngest ever F1 world champion. A 50-point lead over Lewis Hamilton in second place makes his path clear, especially as no championship leader has ever squandered such a buffer after the break.

Pre-season predictions suggested otherwise, with teammate George Russell tipped as the heavy favorite. But since round two in China, Antonelli has been a cut above. His one-lap pace has been key, with six poles this season. Every time he's faced a setback, he has bounced back in champion-like fashion—think Belgium, where he dominated from pole after failing to score in two of the previous three races due to reliability issues.

What's more impressive is his growth from last year's up-and-down rookie season. At Zandvoort, he made a needless off in FP1 and finished outside the points after a 10-second penalty for hitting Charles Leclerc. This time, there's no reason to expect a struggle.

Sudden Change at Red Bull

Max Verstappen will have yet another teammate change, but this time it's not performance-related. Isack Hadjar injured his wrist during a gym session and was declared unfit for Zandvoort, the scene of his only F1 podium. Red Bull has called up Liam Lawson from Racing Bulls as his replacement.

This will be Lawson's third grand prix with Red Bull, after being demoted early in 2025 following a poor start to his first full season. But he's more mature now, sitting ninth in the standings and 'best of the rest' behind the top four teams. He'll partner rookie Arvid Lindblad, and the pressure is on for a strong showing.
