M-Sport Ford has once again proven why they are regarded as the toughest team in the WRC paddock. This time, the rescue mission was for Martins Sesks, whose car was badly damaged after a heavy crash at Rally Finland.
Many thought the Latvian's day was over. Even team principal Richard Millener was initially pessimistic looking at the wreckage. However, an FIA scrutineer confirmed the roll cage was intact, offering a glimmer of hope.
14 Mechanics vs The Clock
The team had just four hours to get the Ford Puma Rally1 running again. A total of 14 mechanics worked around the car like an army, replacing body panels and carrying out necessary mechanical repairs.
Fortunately, most of the damage was cosmetic. Even so, the time pressure was immense. Every second counted, and the team worked relentlessly.
The result was extraordinary. "We finished everything and still had six minutes to spare. We even had time for a group photo," Millener said with a laugh. The seemingly impossible mission was a complete success.
Comeback and Praise for the Team
Thanks to that hard work, Sesks was able to return on Sunday and fight for Super Sunday and Power Stage points. He finished eighth in both sessions.
After the rally, the Latvian was full of praise for his team. "They did an absolutely fantastic job. But we were also extremely lucky in the accident itself. After some minor repairs, we were able to drive away from the stage under our own power," he said.
"The wheels were straight. Nothing other than bodywork panels needed replacing. It was a very unfortunate situation for us, but at the same time we were also very lucky," he added.
Mammoth repair jobs like this have become familiar territory for M-Sport. At Rally Mexico in 2015, Ott Tanak's car sank into a lake, and the mechanics had only three hours to fix it. They pulled it off.
