The United States Grand Prix in Austin not only pushed Andrea Kimi Antonelli to the brink of his maiden Formula 1 world championship—with the Italian needing just two points in Mexico to seal the crown—but also mathematically eliminated Max Verstappen from the 2026 drivers' title contention.
On paper, this outcome is hardly a shocking development given Red Bull's challenging start to the year, which left the four-time world champion without a realistic path back to the top of the standings against the front-runners.
However, from a statistical standpoint, the milestone is massive and marks the definitive close of an extraordinary era at the sharp end of the grid.

After securing four consecutive world titles and narrowly missing out on a fifth by a razor-thin margin of just two points at the season finale last year, Verstappen has now seen his championship hopes extinguished with five grands prix still remaining on the calendar.
The last time the Dutchman was mathematically ruled out of the title race this early in a season was back in 2020, when Lewis Hamilton clinched his seventh career world championship in Turkey with three rounds still left to run.
