The Lusail International Circuit once again served as a dramatic stage under the iconic floodlights. During the 2026 MotoGP Qatar Practice session, Fabio di Giannantonio stunned the field by setting a new lap record, clocking in at 1 minute 50.406 seconds. The Pertamina VR46 Ducati rider sent a clear warning to his rivals, reaffirming his mastery of the desert track where he claimed his maiden grand prix victory back in 2023.
Behind Di Giannantonio's stellar performance, championship leader Marc Marquez faced an unexpected technical hurdle. The eight-time world champion’s GP26 suffered a broken chain while entering the final corner, damaging the rear wheel aero components and forcing him to switch to his second bike. Despite the setback, the mental resilience lauded by Davide Tardozzi allowed him to remain competitive, ultimately finishing in second place.
Marco Bezzecchi rounded out the top three, showcasing the strength of the Aprilia machinery. Meanwhile, Jorge Martin successfully secured a direct spot in Q2 by finishing seventh, a crucial result as he continues his physical recovery while fighting to keep his title hopes alive.

A major shock emerged from the KTM garage, as Pedro Acosta failed to break into the top ten, forcing him to fight through the challenging Q1 session. This result adds pressure to the Austrian factory team, especially as Enea Bastianini managed to deliver a solid performance, securing sixth place.
With the gaps between the frontrunners being razor-thin, Saturday's qualifying is set to be an intense affair. Di Giannantonio's raw pace at Lusail proves that even without the championship lead held by Marquez, he remains a potent threat capable of disrupting the title narrative this weekend.
