The Lusail International Circuit provided another night of intense drama under the floodlights as the 2026 MotoGP Practice session unfolded. Fabio di Giannantonio took center stage, smashing the lap record to top the standings amidst a heated battle for the world championship title.
The VR46 Ducati rider found his rhythm the moment he bolted on a soft rear tire, clocking a blistering time to edge out championship leader Marc Marquez by 0.142s. Despite a bizarre technical mishap where his chain flew off his primary bike midway through, Marquez remained unfazed, jumping onto his second bike to secure second place and a guaranteed spot in Q2.
Meanwhile, Marquez’s closest title rival, Jorge Martin, managed to stay out of trouble. Despite battling pain in his broken right wrist, the factory Aprilia rider secured seventh place. Marco Bezzecchi also put in a stellar performance, claiming third to highlight the dominance of the Italian manufacturer on the desert track.

The session also marked a return to form for Pecco Bagnaia. After a series of lackluster outings, the Ducati Lenovo rider found his pace, finishing fourth. In contrast, Pedro Acosta provided a shock result, struggling for speed and finishing 14th, forcing the Red Bull KTM rider to navigate the treacherous Q1 session.
The unique characteristics of the Lusail track—requiring high top-end speed on the straights and careful tire management under the 5,000 floodlights—continue to be the primary technical hurdles. With the absence of the Yamaha quartet, the 18-rider field feels increasingly compressed, where every millisecond counts toward the all-important grid positions.
As the paddock turns its focus to qualifying, the pressure is mounting. Teams are now pouring over telemetry data to refine their race setup, knowing that for those stuck in Q1, the margin for error has effectively vanished in this high-stakes Qatar weekend.
