The battle for grid position heated up dramatically as Saturday morning's practice session concluded at the Sepang International Circuit. Enea Bastianini delivered a major surprise by setting the absolute pace, putting down a strong marker for the Austrian manufacturer ahead of the crucial qualifying sessions.
The Italian rider stormed to the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1 minute 58.516 seconds. However, that benchmark time—much like Alex Marquez's effort in second place, 0.288 seconds adrift—came during a frantic dummy qualifying run utilizing brand-new soft compound tires in the closing stages of the session.
Meanwhile, Aprilia showcased a notable resurgence in race-pace potential. Marco Bezzecchi and his teammate anchored a strong response from the Noale factory by setting the benchmark pace on used rubber, solidifying third and fourth positions overall and highlighting solid longevity on the RS-GP26.

Down the order, championship leader Marc Marquez found himself struggling to extract ultimate performance, finishing down in 13th position after dominating the opening day of action. Meanwhile, his closest title rival continued to manage physical limitations stemming from a recent wrist fracture.
With track temperatures soaring and the championship margin tightly contested at the top, all eyes are now firmly fixed on the upcoming Qualifying 1 session where the grid will sort itself out for an unmissable Grand Prix showdown.
