Championship leader Kimi Antonelli has claimed his seventh pole position of the 2026 season at Formula 1's United States Grand Prix, defeating Max Verstappen in a thrillingly close qualifying session at the Circuit of the Americas. The Mercedes driver surged to the front with a 1m34.035s on his first Q3 run, holding off the Red Bull duo.
This crucial pole position keeps Kimi Antonelli on track to potentially clinch the 2026 F1 world championship this weekend. He needs to win the grand prix while title rival and team-mate George Russell finishes ninth or lower to seal the crown early, adding massive stakes to Sunday's race across the demanding 5.5km Austin layout.
Verstappen had to settle for second place after failing to improve on his final flying lap, with Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar slotting into third. Charles Leclerc, who looked exceptionally fast throughout practice and Q2, ultimately slipped to fourth when it mattered most, ahead of Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
Meanwhile, George Russell endured a difficult session down in sixth position. McLaren's Lando Norris saw his final fast lap deleted due to track limits infringement, leaving him behind teammate Oscar Piastri as the grid settled behind the front-runners.
Further down the order, strategic decisions unfolded within the Racing Bulls camp as Arvid Lindblad faced a grid penalty for engine changes, prompting tactical plays alongside teammate Liam Lawson to maximize the team's standing in the Constructors' Championship.
