When the lights went out at Monza, all eyes were on Italian youngster Kimi Antonelli, who delivered a stellar performance in front of his home crowd. The Mercedes driver claimed his second win of the season, cementing his status as one of Formula 1's future stars after 53 thrilling laps at the historic circuit.
Antonelli, who started from pole, managed to hold his lead from the outset. He showed remarkable maturity, managing his pace and tyres perfectly despite pressure from teammate George Russell.
Russell finished second, just 3.8 seconds behind, securing a sweet 1-2 finish for the German manufacturer. This marked Mercedes' first double podium of the 2026 season, signaling their return to dominance after a tough start to the year.
Behind them, Max Verstappen had to settle for third place after a fierce battle with the McLaren duo. The Dutchman's two-stop strategy wasn't enough to challenge Mercedes' pace, while Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri took fourth and fifth, showing consistency despite lacking race-winning speed.
Bad news came from the Ferrari camp. Charles Leclerc retired on the first lap after a collision, much to the disappointment of the tifosi. Lewis Hamilton, who managed to climb to sixth, couldn't do more to improve the team's result in front of their home fans.
With this result, Antonelli strengthens his position in the drivers' championship, while Mercedes closes in on the constructors' lead. Monza once again proved that the 2026 season is full of surprises and tight competition until the very last lap.
