The premier class engines roar back to life at the legendary Phillip Island circuit as riders prepare to tackle the opening practice sessions of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. Friday's action carries massive significance as this weekend marks MotoGP's final appearance at the iconic coastal layout, with the event scheduled to move to the new Adelaide street circuit starting from the 2027 season onwards.
Tension in the paddock is palpable with the world championship battle sitting on a knife-edge following the intense rounds in Indonesia. Only two points currently separate Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez at the summit of the standings, putting immense pressure on both title contenders to find their optimal bike setup right from the very first minute of FP1.
Both Marquez and Martin were forced to sit out last year's Phillip Island round due to injuries, a weekend where Marco Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez secured a clean sweep of Sprint and Grand Prix victories for Aprilia. However, Marquez boasts an impressive pedigree as a four-time premier-class winner at this venue, including a stellar victory during his sole previous Ducati outing with Gresini in 2024.
Beyond the championship fight, local hero Jack Miller prepares for an emotional final Australian Grand Prix appearance before his impending switch to WorldSBK next season. The grid also features former Phillip Island race winners Johann Zarco and Alex Rins, ensuring fierce competition throughout the entire field as teams search for rear grip and stability.
Weather conditions will also dictate the tactical approach for the teams across the weekend. While bright and sunny skies greeted the support classes early this morning, rain showers and notably cooler temperatures are heavily forecast for Saturday and Sunday, making today's data gathering window exceptionally vital for everyone in the pit lane.
