McLaren CEO Zak Brown has dropped a major hint that Max Verstappen’s longtime Formula 1 race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase could make the switch to Woking sooner than initially anticipated. The British engineer, who has been an instrumental figure alongside the Dutch world champion throughout his entire career at Red Bull, was originally slated to join McLaren no later than 2028.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Zak Brown expressed optimism regarding an accelerated timeline for the high-profile acquisition, suggesting that discussions held over the past few months could yield results as early as next year as part of the team's ongoing technical strengthening.
"I’m optimistic we’ll see him in papaya at some point next year," Zak Brown told Sky Sports F1, highlighting the immense progress and ambitious atmosphere currently driving the factory forward.

Red Bull has proactively prepared for the eventual departure by integrating Tom Hart into practice sessions alongside Max Verstappen to groom a successor, while also securing key personnel for future operations. McLaren's initial statement confirmed that Gianpiero Lambiase will assume the role of Chief Racing Officer, reporting directly to Team Principal Andrea Stella to oversee overall race team leadership.
The strategic acquisition underscores McLaren's long-term commitment to sustaining a championship-winning culture, reinforcing their leadership pool with elite engineering talent as they cement their competitive standing at the pinnacle of motorsport.
