Zak Brown Explains Why He Chose IndyCar Washington Over Dutch GP

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, made a head-turning decision last weekend. Instead of flying to Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix, Brown opted to attend the inaugural IndyCar race in Washington D.C., the Freedom 250. Meanwhile, his F1 squad thrived, with Lando Norris taking pole and victory.

In an interview with Will Buxton for SPEED, Brown admitted he wished he could be in two places at once. But as a team leader, he has to choose where his presence has the most impact across McLaren's racing entities, including IndyCar, Formula E, and Extreme E.

"I'd like to be at both, but I've not been able to figure that out," Brown said. "My role is to go where I can have the most impact on our racing teams, where's the most commercial activity and growth. This race is epic; I've never seen anything like it, so I had to be here."

Brown also joked about monitoring the Dutch GP via his "top-secret laptop" and that his teams can survive without him. "Don't tell anyone, but our three racing teams can survive just fine when I don't make a race weekend," he quipped.

The commercial impact was a key factor. The Freedom 250 became the most-watched non-Indy 500 IndyCar race since 1995, averaging over 3.2 million viewers, per FOX. The event attracted business leaders and high-profile figures, including the US President. "We have great partners in Holland, but this is new, so we have a lot of first-time partners here," Brown explained.

On track, Arrow McLaren narrowly missed victory in D.C. Christian Lundgaard finished second behind Kyle Kirkwood, while Nolan Siegel and Pato O'Ward took sixth and 16th, respectively. Brown praised the event as a massive success and a huge momentum boost for IndyCar.
