Yamaha is set to electrify the paddock at the 2026 Motocross of Nations (MXoN) in Ernee, France, with a surprise appearance. The Yamaha YE-01 Racing Concept, an electric motocross prototype, will take part in an on-track exhibition starting October 2.
This isn't just a show. Yamaha aims to prove that electric propulsion can conquer one of the most brutal disciplines in motorsport: motocross. Muddy terrain, high jumps, and sharp turns will be the ultimate test for a bike that was previously only displayed at EICMA in Milan last year.
From EICMA to the Mud
The YE-01 is not a stranger to two-wheel fans. It was first unveiled at EICMA 2025 as Yamaha's vision for the future of motocross. Now, Yamaha is bringing it to a real track. The MXoN exhibition is a crucial step to gather data and showcase the potential of electric bikes in a competitive environment.
The project stems from a collaboration between Yamaha Motor and Electric Motion (EM), a French electric motorcycle manufacturer. Under the concept "Expanding the Possibilities of Riders and Machines," it combines Yamaha's racing expertise with EM's electric propulsion technology. For the chassis, Yamaha adopts technology from the YZ450F, their flagship motocross bike, to maintain the agility and riding feel that define the discipline.
Towards the MXEP Era
This move also serves as preparation for the upcoming MXEP, an electric motocross championship. Yamaha wants to ensure that the transition to electrification doesn't erase the character and emotion of motocross racing. By appearing at MXoN, they can gauge how far electric bikes can compete at the highest level.
This initiative aligns with the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050, which targets carbon neutrality. Yamaha is not just replacing combustion engines with electric motors; it is exploring how this technology can create new riding experiences. For Electric Motion, this collaboration is a global stage to showcase their expertise in electric propulsion.
