Yamaha's hopes of a strong comeback after the summer break were dashed at Silverstone. After both factory riders scored points in Germany, the British round turned into a double nightmare: Alex Rins was out on lap one, while Fabio Quartararo lost his points after the race due to a technical penalty. The Japanese manufacturer left empty-handed.
The first blow came in the main race. Quartararo crossed the line 12th, which would have earned four points. But hours later, race direction handed him a 16-second penalty for an irregularity in the tyre pressure data transmission system—a rare mistake that dropped the 2021 world champion to 16th and last, out of the points.
“I expected a difficult race,” Quartararo said. “I couldn't push as I wanted. Tyre degradation was high again, though in a different way than yesterday (sprint). Yesterday it was sudden, today it was gradual. But still, it wasn't good for us.” His words reflected deep frustration, especially as Yamaha arrived with optimism after a solid German GP.
Rins, meanwhile, didn't even finish a lap. He made contact with fellow Spaniard Joan Mir at Turn 7, ending both their races instantly. Fortunately, no injuries. “It's a shame to end the weekend like this, with a crash. I couldn't avoid Joan and I went down. We need to recover and come back stronger in Aragon in three weeks. We'll keep fighting!” Rins said.
This double failure is a heavy blow for Yamaha in the constructors' standings. They are falling further behind, and pressure is mounting to find competitive pace. With a three-week break before Aragon, the Iwata factory has time to analyze the issues—both technical and mental.
