Elfyn Evans still leads the 2026 WRC standings, but his advantage now hangs by a thread after Rally Saudi Arabia was officially cancelled. The sudden decision completely reshapes the title fight: from two remaining rallies to just one, with Sardinia set to host the final battle.
The FIA and WRC Promoter announced the cancellation of the November event due to ongoing regional developments. No replacement event is planned. This means Rally Italia Sardegna, originally the penultimate round, now becomes the season finale where the 2026 champion will be crowned.
The consequences are huge. Instead of 70 points available over two rounds, just 35 remain on the table in Sardinia. Evans leads a three-way fight by only 21 points from Sami Pajari and Oliver Solberg. With everything now riding on one gravel weekend in Alghero, the title battle will go down to the wire from 1–4 October.
The decision is a bitter pill to swallow. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said they had worked closely with partners in Saudi Arabia and WRC Promoter to explore every possible route. "Ongoing regional developments mean that the WRC element of Rally Saudi Arabia will not proceed this year," he said. "These are never easy decisions, particularly after the significant work undertaken by everyone involved."
WRC Promoter CEO Eric Boullier echoed that sentiment, stressing the cancellation is due to logistical challenges and regional developments, not a reflection of the host's capability. "We greatly value our partnership with SAMF, SMC and the Ministry of Sport. Our focus now is on working closely together towards the successful return of Rally Saudi Arabia to the WRC in 2027," he stated.
For Evans, this is the ultimate test of mental strength. He must maintain focus under drastically increased pressure. Pajari and Solberg, both hungry for glory, will look to capitalise on any opportunity. Sardinia is known as one of the toughest and most unforgiving rallies, where even the smallest mistake can be fatal.
With only one rally left, there is no room for error. Strategy, endurance, and luck will be tested to the final corner. Who will emerge as the 2026 WRC champion? All eyes are now on Italy.
