The curtain-closing round of the WorldSBK season at the Jerez Circuit delivered intense racing drama as Nicolo Bulega clinched another stunning victory to complete a dominant weekend sweep. The Italian rider showcased faultless pace across the Andalusian asphalt, rounding off his championship-winning campaign in style.
The final race of the year got off to a blistering start with Alvaro Bautista launching brilliantly off the line. The Spaniard slotted into third place initially, trailing Iker Lecuona who grabbed the early lead, with Bulega sitting second. Bulega quickly sized up his teammate before taking control of the race to avoid mistakes in the opening sector.
Once at the front, the newly crowned world champion instantly pulled away from the chasing pack, establishing a seven-tenth advantage. Further down the order, intense battles unfolded for position as riders fought fiercely through the lower top ten amidst cooler track temperatures and a heavily overcast sky threatening rain.
Midway through the race, marshals waved the white flag indicating spots of rain falling over the Jerez venue. With only five laps remaining, the probability of a flag-to-flag race was low, but track conditions grew trickier. Sam Lowes began eating into Bautista's advantage, closing the gap down to under a second in the battle for the final podium spot.
With three laps to go, rain hit Turns 1 and 2 of the Spanish circuit. Bautista pushed hard as urged by his mechanics from the pit wall, but the slippery surface limited rider aggression. Sam Lowes continued to apply mounting pressure on the back of the reigning double champion's machine.
The decisive move arrived on the final lap when Sam Lowes lunged past Bautista at Turn 5. Bautista ran slightly wide at Turn 6, handing the British rider crucial breathing room. As Bulega and Lecuona crossed the finish line to secure the top spots, Bautista was forced to settle for fourth, missing out on a final podium finish of the year.
