Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has defended the decision to ask George Russell to let Kimi Antonelli pass in the Dutch Grand Prix, calling it "completely normal."
The crucial moment came late in the race at Zandvoort. Antonelli, running second, pitted under the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) triggered by Esteban Ocon's stricken Haas. As a result, Russell, who was behind, slipped ahead into second place, while Antonelli dropped to third.
Had that order stood, Russell would have cut Antonelli's points lead to 53. However, Russell complied with the team's request to hand the position back, allowing Antonelli to reclaim second. Russell then managed to hold off a charging Lewis Hamilton to secure third place.
The result was an effective six-point swing in Antonelli's favor, with the gap between the two drivers now standing at 59 points—exactly where it was before the weekend. Russell had clawed back three points in the Sprint, but that gain was erased.
Russell now sits second in the championship, tied on points with Hamilton but ahead on countback thanks to two wins to one. Wolff explained that if the roles had been reversed, Russell would have been given the same benefit.
"Obviously, team orders are always harsh," Wolff told media, including RacingNews365. "From one driver's perspective, you can't expect a lion in the car and then a walkover at the same time, but it's what we always discuss."
"It was something we agree on always at the Sunday morning strategy meeting: We're not losing time with each other if there's competitors breathing down your neck. We've seen it with the Ferraris at the beginning of the year, I think in Shanghai. You lose so much race time, we risk losing more points, and that's why we are trying to be proactive and avoid losing any points," Wolff explained.
He added that it was a difficult call because Antonelli was running second, clear of Russell, and that was the order they restored after the stop. "So [it was] completely normal, and we would have done it the other way around also," he concluded.
