Wolff Backs Return to V8 Engines in F1 Overhaul

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has expressed his support for Formula 1's potential return to V8 engines in the next regulatory cycle. In an exclusive interview with RacingNews365, Wolff admitted that as a "purist," he likes the direction proposed by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who wants to end the turbo-hybrid era that began in 2014.

Under the current engine regulations, Mercedes has won 126 races, eight constructors' titles, and seven drivers' crowns. However, Wolff believes the complexity of current hybrid engines detracts from the essence of racing. He criticized the sound of engines revving on the grid, likening it to a fire alarm, and emphasized that the most adaptable drivers will prevail, as demonstrated by Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli.

Wolff revealed that he has been in talks with Ben Sulayem, Stefano Domenicali, and other engine manufacturers. The plan under consideration is a V8 engine with an output of around 1,000 horsepower, with a power split of 80:20 between the internal combustion engine (ICE) and battery. This resembles the old KERS systems but with a far greater reliance on the ICE.

In the short term, F1 will move towards a 60:40 split by 2028, with increased fuel flow. Wolff explained that major engine architecture changes would be required for an immediate jump to 60:40 for 2027. He also revealed that a plan to add 50 kilowatts of engine power for next year was blocked by Ferrari, resulting in a 20-kilowatt increase this year and 50 kilowatts in 2028.

This engine regulation change will be a major turning point for Formula 1. By returning to simpler, more aggressive-sounding V8 engines, F1 hopes to attract back old fans who miss the atmospheric engine era.
