Formula 1 broadcaster Will Buxton has slammed Williams for "overpromising and underdelivering" in 2026, while admitting he remains puzzled by Carlos Sainz's decision to join the Grove-based squad over Audi.
Despite bold claims throughout 2025, Williams has struggled badly in 2026. They arrived at pre-season testing in Bahrain on the back foot, having missed private testing in Barcelona, and have since battled with an overweight car.
After 12 rounds, Williams languishes ninth in the constructors' standings with just 11 points. Sainz and Alex Albon are 16th and 17th in the drivers' championship with six and five points respectively. To make matters worse, the two teammates collided at Zandvoort, forcing Albon to retire and leaving Sainz with a 10-second penalty.
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Buxton contrasted Williams' approach with that of Audi, which arrived as a works team in 2026. "There's an interesting difference in mindset. Audi have been understated, underpromising and overdelivering. Whereas Williams keep making big statements, but then disappoint. They overpromise and underdeliver," he said.
Buxton also questioned Sainz's choice. "I found it interesting that you would turn down a factory seat for the dream of Williams. James Vowles must have sold him a brilliant dream," he added.
Williams now faces an uphill battle to salvage their season. Buxton's criticism serves as a stark reminder that in F1, big promises without results only lead to disappointment.
